Karl Reichmuth, founder of Reichmuth & Co and co-founder of RealUnit Schweiz AG presented his new book “New Currencies in Sight” to the public on June 21, 2021. It bluntly addresses the major problems of today’s monetary system, which is increasingly reaching its limits. The RealUnit is described in one chapter as a proven way to preserve the value of assets over the long term. For those interested, we provide this chapter from the book as a free download.
Unlike in the past, the value of money is no longer tied to something real. Almost everywhere in the world, gold was abolished as a stability anchor for money years ago. Government currencies, as measured by the prices of consumer goods, have experienced a creeping devaluation since the removal of the gold peg in 1971. For example, the U.S. dollar has lost about 85% of its purchasing power in the last 50 years, and the euro has already lost 31% since its introduction in 1999!
Today, the supply of sovereign currencies is controlled by central banks. And they can print money virtually at will. Recently, central banks have created out of thin air billions in new money that doesn’t correspond to anything of real value. This is a problem because the more units of a government currency there are, the less each unit is worth. Those who hold their savings in such currencies can subsequently afford less and less.
Is our current monetary system the best possible solution? When will the central banks reach the limit of their ultra-loose monetary policy? Is it a mere coincidence that there is so much demand for cryptocurrencies and other parallel currencies, especially in today’s market environment? How well are our assets protected and how easily accessible will they be in the next financial crisis?
Karl Reichmuth, with more than 60 years of experience as a banker, and many well-known co-authors from the financial and crypto worlds shed light on the upheaval of the monetary system in the book “New Currencies in Sight” from Axel Springer Verlag (ISBN 978-3-03875-385-8). In it, banking, monetary, and IT experts outline the blockchain landscape and introduce private currency alternatives, including the RealUnit. The book is recommended for anyone interested in the history of money, actively concerned about preserving the value of their assets, or seeking more insight into the new world of cryptocurrencies.
